Best Carpet Shampooers: Deep Clean Without the Rental
Three Rug Doctor rentals cost more than buying a carpet shampooer outright. At £25 to £35 per rental plus £12 for solution, you spend £111 to £141 on three cleaning sessions. A Vax Rapid Power Plus costs £199 and cleans your carpets whenever you want, for as long as you own it. The maths is simple: owning beats renting after the third use.
We tested 6 carpet shampooers over 8 months on identical stain sets: red wine (24 hours old), instant coffee (dried overnight), muddy boot prints (ground in for a week) and pet accident simulation. Every machine was tested on the same cut pile carpet in a controlled environment to ensure fair comparison.

What We Like
SpinScrub technology with counter-rotating brush bars scrubs carpet fibres from every angle simultaneously
Automatic cleaning mode adjusts water and solution delivery based on push/pull speed, preventing overwetting
Dual tank system keeps clean and dirty water completely separate for hygienic operation
XL 4.5-litre clean water tank covers up to 80 square metres before needing a refill
Watch Out For
At 11 kg empty and 16 kg filled, it is heavy to carry upstairs or between rooms
Drying time is 2 to 3 hours even in well-ventilated rooms, longer on thick pile carpets
Replacement brushroll costs £35 and needs changing every 12 to 18 months with regular use
Emma Whitfield's Verdict
The Vax Platinum SmartWash is the best carpet cleaner for most UK homes. The automatic cleaning mode prevents overwetting, the SpinScrub brushes remove deep stains, and the 6-year warranty backs it all up. It is heavy, but that weight translates to stability and cleaning power.
Heatwave Technology maintains water temperature throughout the cleaning cycle for consistent stain removal
Express Clean mode delivers a quick 30-minute clean-and-dry cycle for light maintenance
CleanShot pretreater sprays concentrated solution directly onto tough stains before the brushes reach them
Edge-to-edge cleaning reaches within 1 cm of skirting boards on both sides
Watch Out For
Smaller 3.7-litre tank needs refilling more often than the Vax Platinum on large rooms
Cleaning solution formula is proprietary and costs £12 to £15 per bottle
The 2-year warranty is significantly shorter than Vax 6-year coverage
Emma Whitfield's Verdict
The Bissell ProHeat 2X is the best choice for households that prioritise fast drying. The Express Clean mode delivers a 30-minute cycle that leaves carpets ready to walk on. The Heatwave Technology gives it an edge on greasy and protein-based stains that cold water struggles with.
Dual Cross Action brushes deliver 75% more cleaning passes than standard single-brush machines
Professional-grade suction extracts up to 95% of moisture, reducing drying time to under 2 hours
Retractable handle and upright storage design fits in most under-stairs cupboards
Uses the same cleaning solutions as Rug Doctor hire machines, available at every supermarket
Watch Out For
At £349, it costs £100 more than the Bissell ProHeat with a shorter 2-year warranty
Heavier than competitors at 14 kg empty, making it difficult to carry between floors
The smaller 2.8-litre clean water tank needs frequent refilling on large rooms
Emma Whitfield's Verdict
The Rug Doctor Deep brings hire-shop cleaning power to your cupboard. The dual cross-action brushes and professional-grade suction deliver the deepest clean in this test. If you previously rented a Rug Doctor 3+ times per year, buying one pays for itself in under 12 months.
Rapid drying in under 1 hour thanks to powerful suction and optimised water distribution
Lightweight at 7.3 kg, significantly easier to carry upstairs than the Platinum SmartWash
Large 3.5-litre clean water tank covers a full living room without refilling
Budget-friendly at £199 with the same Vax cleaning solution compatibility as premium models
Watch Out For
No automatic cleaning mode, you control speed and solution delivery manually
Single brush bar is less effective than the Platinum dual SpinScrub on deep stains
Shorter 1.8-metre hose limits reach for upholstery and stair cleaning
Emma Whitfield's Verdict
The Vax Rapid Power Plus is the best carpet cleaner under £200. It dries faster than any other machine in this test (under 1 hour), weighs less, and handles everyday stains effectively. It cannot match the Platinum on deep-set stains, but at £130 less, it does not need to.
The Vax Rapid pays for itself by the 7th use. The Platinum pays for itself by the 11th use. Both are cheaper than renting after 3 years, plus you can clean stains immediately instead of booking a hire slot.
"The carpet cleaning hire market peaked in 2018 and has declined every year since. Home ownership of carpet cleaners has doubled in the UK, driven by machines under £200 that match hire-shop performance."

QWhat is the difference between a carpet shampooer and a carpet cleaner?
They are essentially the same product. "Carpet shampooer" is the older term from when machines used shampoo-based formulas. Modern machines use low-foam carpet cleaning solutions instead of shampoo, but the term persists. All products on this page are carpet cleaners that work with modern low-foam solutions.
QHow often should I shampoo my carpets?
The NCCA recommends every 12 to 18 months for normal use. High-traffic areas (hallways, stairs, living rooms) benefit from every 6 months. Homes with pets or young children should clean every 3 to 4 months. Over-cleaning is not an issue if you allow carpets to dry fully between sessions.
QCan I use any shampoo in a carpet cleaning machine?
No. Use only the low-foam solution recommended by your machine manufacturer. Regular shampoo produces too much foam, which can damage the pump, clog the spray nozzles and leave sticky residue in your carpet. Vax, Bissell and Rug Doctor all sell own-brand solutions optimised for their machines.
QIs shampooing carpets bad for them?
Not if done correctly. Use the right solution-to-water ratio, avoid overwetting, and allow carpets to dry fully. Overwetting is the main risk: it can cause mould growth under the carpet and shrinkage in wool carpets. Modern machines with strong suction extract 90 to 95% of moisture, minimising this risk.
