Best Steam Carpet Cleaners: Heat vs Chemical Cleaning
Steam carpet cleaners promise chemical-free cleaning that kills 99.9% of bacteria. Sounds perfect. But here is the uncomfortable truth that manufacturers do not advertise: steam cleaners sanitise your carpet, they do not remove stains. Steam loosens dirt and kills germs with 100°C+ heat, but it does not extract the dirt from the fibres. For that, you need a traditional carpet washer with suction extraction.
We tested 4 steam carpet cleaners alongside our standard extraction machines to answer the question UK buyers actually need answered: when should you use steam, when should you use extraction, and can one machine do both?
Steam vs Extraction: The Honest Comparison
Steam Cleaners
Strengths: Kills bacteria and dust mites. No chemicals needed. Fast drying (30-60 min). Low water usage. Weaknesses: Does not extract dirt. Poor stain removal. Cannot replace traditional washing. Risk of fibre damage on synthetic carpet.
Extraction Cleaners
Strengths: Removes visible stains (96%+). Extracts ground-in dirt. Deep cleans fibres. Proven technology. Weaknesses: Uses water and chemicals. 2-4 hour drying time. Heavier machines. Does not sanitise (unless using hot water).
Our Recommendation
For most UK homes, an extraction carpet cleaner (like the Vax Platinum SmartWash) is more useful than a steam cleaner. If you need both stain removal AND sanitisation, use your extraction cleaner first, then steam afterwards. Or choose the Bissell ProHeat for its Heatwave heated water, which provides some sanitisation benefits during extraction.
