Rug Doctor Review: Is Buying Better Than Renting?
You know Rug Doctor from the hire machines at Tesco. That big red unit you wrestle into the car boot, haul up the stairs and return 24 hours later with aching arms and a damp carpet. But here is the thing most people do not realise: Rug Doctor also sells machines you can keep. The Rug Doctor Deep costs £349, uses the same solutions as the hire machines, and sits in your cupboard ready to go whenever you need it. No booking. No time pressure. No returning it by 5pm.
We bought the Rug Doctor Deep and used it for 6 months alongside the Vax Platinum SmartWash (£329) and Bissell ProHeat 2X (£299). The Rug Doctor delivered the deepest clean in the test, removing 98% of stains with its dual cross-action brushes. But it is also the heaviest machine at 14 kg and has the smallest tank at 2.8 litres. Here is the full 6-month picture.

What We Like

Professional-grade suction extracts up to 95% of moisture, reducing drying time to under 2 hours
Retractable handle and upright storage design fits in most under-stairs cupboards
Uses the same cleaning solutions as Rug Doctor hire machines, available at every supermarket
Watch Out For
At £349, it costs £100 more than the Bissell ProHeat with a shorter 2-year warranty
Heavier than competitors at 14 kg empty, making it difficult to carry between floors
The smaller 2.8-litre clean water tank needs frequent refilling on large rooms
Emma Whitfield's Verdict
The Rug Doctor Deep brings hire-shop cleaning power to your cupboard. The dual cross-action brushes and professional-grade suction deliver the deepest clean in this test. If you previously rented a Rug Doctor 3+ times per year, buying one pays for itself in under 12 months.
Hiring (2x per year): 6 rentals x £30 + 6 solutions x £12 + 6 trips to Tesco = £252 + your time
Buying Rug Doctor Deep: £349 machine + 6 solutions x £10 = £409
Buying Vax Rapid Power Plus: £199 machine + 6 solutions x £8 = £247
The Rug Doctor Deep costs more than hiring over 3 years. But you get unlimited cleans, immediate stain response, and no Tesco car park wrestling. If you clean 3+ times per year, it breaks even by year 2.
Our honest take: If you want the absolute deepest clean and do not mind the weight, buy the Rug Doctor Deep. If you want 90% of the cleaning power at lower weight and cost, buy the Vax Platinum SmartWash instead. Both are excellent machines for different priorities.
Buy. A Rug Doctor hire costs £25 to £35 per day plus £12 for solution. The Rug Doctor Deep costs £349. After 10 to 12 uses, buying is cheaper. If you clean twice per year, the machine pays for itself in under 6 years. You also gain the convenience of cleaning whenever a stain appears.
QIs the Rug Doctor Deep the same as the hire machine?
Very similar but not identical. The hire machines (Mighty Pro X3) are slightly more powerful (1400W vs 1300W) and heavier (25 kg vs 14 kg). The Rug Doctor Deep uses the same dual cross-action brush technology and the same cleaning solutions. Cleaning results are within 5% of the hire machine in our testing.
QWhere can I buy Rug Doctor solution?
Rug Doctor solution is sold at Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrisons, B&Q, Homebase, Amazon and the Rug Doctor website. A 1-litre bottle costs £8 to £10 and covers approximately 40 square metres. Pet-specific and oxy-power formulas are also available at the same retailers.
QHow heavy is the Rug Doctor Deep?
The Rug Doctor Deep weighs 14 kg empty and approximately 17 kg with full tanks. It is the heaviest machine in our test, heavier than the Vax Platinum SmartWash (11 kg) and Bissell ProHeat (8.2 kg). If you need to carry it upstairs, this is a serious consideration.
